Osempic, Mounjaro, Zepbound, Wgovy, Saxenda, Victoza are novel drugs that offer dramatic weight loss.  What they may not tell you is that it must be taken for life.  Once you stop taking them, the extra weight comes back.  In addition there are other effects that can be life threatening.  Serious effects include stomach paralysis, pancreatitis and bowel obstructions.  In addition there can also be gallbladder problems, kidney problems, serious allergic reactions, increased heart rate, suicidal thoughts and changes in vision.  The labels also note nausea, vomiting, and constipation.  Patients have been diagnosed with “cyclic vomiting syndrome” which means they involuntarily vomit multiple times a day. Furthermore, people with a history of certain types of hereditary thyroid cancers are warned against taking these medications.

What’s scarier is that these pharmaceutical companies have launced a telehealth platform to connect patients with prescribers, making it easier for patients to get the drugs they think they want. Patients will never hear about the foundational lifestyle changes that might allow them to lose weight without drugs.

The active ingredient in most of these drugs is semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide receptor agonist (GLP-1).  The peptide radically slows the passage of food through your stomach, thereby making you feel fuller longer.  The NATURAL way to increase GLP-1 is to colonize your gut with akkermansia muciniphila, a bacterium that naturally secretes a GLP-1. This can be done with pre and probiotics.  In addition, by boosting intake of dietary polyphenols such as black tea, red wine grape extract and cranberry extract.

Another NATURAL option is berberine.  We have done an article of the week on berberine but just a reminder berberine helps regulate blood sugar and improves insulin sensitivity and gut microbiome diversity that contributes to weight loss.  It is “nature’s Ozempic”.  A 2022 scientific review found that berberine at an optimal dose of 1 gram per day, reduced insulin levels.  Insulin sensitivity and weight loss are strongly associated and when you are sensitive to insulin, you are able to maintain weight loss better. Berberine functions like metformin by activating adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) which is known as the “metabolic master switch”.

One other tip to for healthy weight naturally is to cut down on linoleic acid (LA) below 5 grams a day.  Consuming too much linoleic acid is the primary factor driving the overweight and obesity epidemics.
